Walk into any supplement shop and you'll face shelves of colourful tubs promising miracles. The truth is that most supplements are unnecessary, a few are genuinely useful, and none replace hard training and good food. Here's an honest, science-based guide to gym supplements.
The Golden Rule
Supplements 'supplement' an already good diet and training program — they don't replace them. No pill or powder will build muscle if your training and nutrition are poor. Get the basics right first, then consider whether supplements can help at the margins.
Supplements Worth Considering
Whey Protein
Whey is simply a convenient, fast-digesting protein source. It's useful if you struggle to hit your daily protein target through food. It's not magic — a scoop of whey and a few eggs build muscle equally well — but it's practical and cost-effective.
Creatine Monohydrate
Creatine is the most researched and effective supplement in existence. It increases strength, power and muscle size, is extremely safe, and costs little. Take 3–5g daily, any time. For almost everyone who lifts seriously, creatine is worth it.
Caffeine / Pre-Workout
Caffeine genuinely improves focus, energy and performance. A cup of coffee before training works just as well as most expensive pre-workouts. Useful, but don't become dependent on it.
Vitamin D & Omega-3
These support general health, which supports training. Worth considering if your diet or sun exposure is limited — but they're health supplements, not muscle builders.
Supplements That Are Mostly Hype
- BCAAs — Pointless if you already eat enough protein; whole protein contains them.
- Fat burners — Minimal effect; your money is better spent on good food.
- Testosterone boosters — Rarely do anything meaningful.
- Mass gainers — Often just expensive sugar; real food is cheaper and better.
- Glutamine, exotic blends — Little to no proven benefit for most lifters.
If you gave 90% of people their money back for supplements and told them to buy eggs, chicken and dal instead, they'd build more muscle.
A Simple, Effective Stack
For most people in Nepal serious about training, a minimal, high-value approach is: whey protein if you need help hitting protein, creatine monohydrate daily, and a coffee before training. That's it. Everything else is optional.
