Cutting is the phase where you lose fat to reveal the muscle you've built, getting lean and defined. The challenge is losing fat without losing the muscle you worked so hard for. This guide shows you how to cut the right way.

What Is Cutting?

Cutting means eating in a calorie deficit to burn fat while training to preserve muscle. The result is a leaner, more defined physique. Where bulking is about growth, cutting is about revealing what's underneath.

Set the Right Calorie Deficit

Aim for a moderate deficit of about 20–25% below maintenance, targeting fat loss of roughly 0.5–1% of bodyweight per week. Too aggressive a deficit burns muscle, tanks your energy and gym performance, and is impossible to sustain. Slow and steady keeps the muscle and the results.

Protein Is Even More Important When Cutting

In a deficit, high protein is critical to protect muscle. Aim for the higher end — around 2–2.4g per kg of bodyweight. Protein also keeps you full, which makes dieting far more bearable. Build every meal around eggs, chicken, fish, dal, paneer or soy.

Keep Lifting Heavy

The biggest cutting mistake is switching to 'light weights and high reps to get toned.' That signals your body to keep the muscle it needs. If you stop lifting heavy in a deficit, your body drops muscle. Keep training with challenging weights — that's what tells your body to hold onto muscle while it burns fat.

Diet burns the fat; heavy lifting keeps the muscle. Do both and you get lean and strong, not skinny.

Use Cardio as a Tool

Cardio helps increase your calorie burn to create the deficit, but it shouldn't replace weights or be overdone. Start with a couple of sessions plus daily walking, and add more only when fat loss stalls. Diet does most of the work — cardio is a supporting tool.

Sample Cutting Approach

  • Moderate calorie deficit with high protein.
  • 3–4 heavy weight sessions per week to preserve muscle.
  • 2–3 cardio sessions plus 8,000–10,000 daily steps.
  • Plenty of vegetables and water to stay full.
  • 7–9 hours sleep to manage hunger and recovery.

Managing Hunger and Adherence

Hunger is part of cutting, but you can manage it: prioritise protein and fibre, drink water, keep busy, and allow occasional planned treats within your calories. Consistency over weeks — not perfection every day — is what reveals a lean physique.

When to Stop Cutting

Cut until you reach your target leanness, then transition carefully back to maintenance to avoid rapid fat regain. Don't stay in an aggressive deficit indefinitely — it's stressful and unsustainable. Cycle between phases over time.

A successful cut is about precision — enough deficit to lose fat, enough protein and training to keep muscle. Our coaches at Deep Gym House guide your cut so you end up lean and strong, not skinny and depleted.
